The program commences with 600 hours of intensive ESL instruction.
After completing the ESL component, the program introduces students to software that is in high demand in any businesses dealing with word processing, spreadsheet data analysis, customized presentations, electronic mail messaging and its implementations to office accounting procedures, along with specific professional software utilities. It includes hands-on training in the above mentioned areas based on the theory of computer operations and bookkeeping data processing. A main feature of the program is experiencing integration between generic and specific skills based on intercommunication and interaction between different types of office computer applications in order to provide full coverage of bookkeeping and accounting needs arising in a real business environment.
OB1500-Computer Office Technology/Bookkeeping and ESL
Four Terms of 15 weeks each (1500 hours 60 weeks).
Full time sessions are available in the mornings and evenings according to the Academic Calendar on Page 54. Students attend 25 hours per week.
Before being accepted, students are required to take Metropolitan Learning Institute's NYSPLACE, CELSA and /or CPAt tests to determine if they possess the reasoning skills that are necessary for intensive study. Any applicant who scores below the minimum cutoff marks for any test will be advised to reconsider his or her career training choice.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Each applicant will also be tested to establish his or her need for Intermediate ESL instruction before enrolling in the program. To qualify, applicants must achieve a minimum score of 27 on the NYS Place Test.
At the end of the Intermediate ESL course, students who score a minimum of 54 on the NYS Place Test will begin career training.
Any student who fails to achieve the minimum test levels must repeat the appropriate units of intermediate ESL (placement will be decided by an ESL instructor and will consider the student's results on the NYS Place Test.
